Basic and Deep Cleanings

Generally, a basic cleaning is for patients who have seen a dentist annually and have been diagnosed with good oral health. Many patients need deep cleanings due to genetic, diet and/or home care factors. This is for patients who have gum disease as a result of bone loss, heavy plaque/tarter and gingivitis. We call it scaling and root planing because we are cleaning deep below your gums and ridding your teeth of all that nasty stuff. Getting numb is usually necessary. Trust us, you want to be numb.

Fillings

There are two general types of fillings: silver fillings (aka amalgam) and white fillings (aka resin or composite). When you have a cavity, the decay is drilled out and the remaining hole is filled. SILVER FILLINGS: This is the traditional filling material used since the beginning of time that is composed of several mixed metals. Silver fillings still work and are better than having no filling. However, most patients prefer the white fillings. COMPOSITE FILLINGS: This material is more common today, and with improved technology, is stronger than before with less side effects such as hot, cold or chewing sensitivity. Among the major benefits of this material are the color/shade and bonding properties. Most fillings today are composite.

Implants

Yes, you can have implants in your mouth. Implants are basically titanium screws that are placed into your bone where you are missing teeth. Once healed, a crown is attached to the implant and you can chew like you have a new tooth.

Root Canals

Everyone thinks these are the worst thing in the world. They have a bad rap because a couple of decades ago, the techniques, materials, and especially the anesthetic were not as AWESOME as they are today. A root canal is a deeper filling. The nerve is removed from the inside of the tooth and filled down to the roots. This procedure is usually done because of infection, fracture, a large cavity or for prevention. You may have “heard” horror stories about root canals but when your tooth really hurts, you’ll beg us to get rid of the nerve.

Crowns

A crown is often recommended when a filling is too big, or a tooth had root canal treatment or something broke. A crown, also called a cap, covers the entire tooth above the roots. It’s glued on permanently. There are several types of materials used to make a crown. GOLD: It’s not the same as “bling” or “grillz”, but really makes for an outstanding crown. Of course, you may not want gold on your front teeth unless you’re really into hip-hop, but it’s an excellent choice for a crown on your back tooth. The fit, feel and strength of gold is incomparable. If Dr.Hanna needed a crown on his back tooth, he would get gold! PORCELAIN FUSED TO METAL (PFM): This has been the standard for a while. The inside of the crown is metal and the outside is porcelain, giving a tooth-like appearance. A PFM crown can be used on both front and back teeth to give a natural appearance. CERAMIC: Technology has afforded us this AWESOME material. When we say ceramic, don’t think about dishware. Imagine white steel! This material has no metal, although it’s just as strong and looks more natural than PFMs. Zirconia is a common choice and has no gray appearance around the gum line and chipping is no longer an issue. Ceramic crowns are becoming more popular than PFMs.

Dentures

Dentures are not like the wooden base with ivory teeth from the days of George Washington. Dentures ultimately restore people’s ability to speak, eat and smile while offering a natural look. Dentures are removable teeth that are custom-made. There are a few different variations. PARTIAL DENTURES: When a patient is only missing a few teeth, to restore function, they may elect to have those missing spaces filled with removable teeth in a cost effective way. IMMEDIATE DENTURES: Many patients realize they will lose all their teeth. Immediate dentures are for patients who do not want to go with missing teeth while their gums and bone heal. Rather than wait for teeth to fall out one by one, patients have the option of having their teeth removed with a denture delivered immediately on the same appointment. COMPLETE DENTURES: Some patients have dentures that are old, broken or worn down. These patients have been missing all their teeth for a while and simply need new dentures to rejuvenate their appearance. The days of removing teeth are over and all you need to do is design your new AWESOME look!

Bridge

If you’re missing one or a few consecutive teeth and want to fill the space with something permanent, a bridge is the answer. In order to have a bridge, you need a healthy tooth on opposite ends of the space to act as anchors. Bridges are made of the same materials as crowns and are glued in permanently.

Oral Surgery

Most people think of a dentist pulling teeth with knees on your chest and palm on your forehead. Don’t worry, we don’t do it that way anymore, at least NOT at AWESOME Dental. This area of dentistry focuses on the removal of teeth, clearing infection, biopsies, removing tissue, adding/removing bone and placing implants, to name a few procedures.
